In the last edition I looked at three teams I think could win the competition now in this week’s edition I will be looking at teams I think have no chance and are perhaps making up the numbers in this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup.
While boasting a whole host of talented individuals such as Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews in recent times the going has been tough for the Sri Lankan national team. Losing series to both South Africa and Australia and those are significant because they were away tours of those countries and with the tournament being held in England, a place where traditionally they struggle I don’t expect things to be much different this time. So look out for a couple individual performances but no real meaningful impact in the tournament except maybe to upset a favorite in a dead rubber for the Sri Lankans.
While the rise of afghan cricket has been exciting to watch in the last couple of years and some of their big name player’s play in some of the biggest tournaments all over the world, I just don’t see them holding a candle to the bigger nations at the World Cup. I can see them making an upset or two though because from what I’ve seen of the Afghan team they are all together and will fight every ball with bat, ball and in the field so watch out for an upset with side they want to prove they belong on the big stage and what better way than to grab a big scalp in this year’s tournament.
The Bangladeshis have been around the block a few times when it comes to the World Cup and never really challenged for honors. They always seem to lack that bit of composure required to get them over the line in tight games and while this squad has been together for a few years now I just don’t see that they can challenge the top dogs again this year. I think as usual they will rustle a few feathers but ultimately come up short once again. Main reason I think they won’t be a force to be reckoned with is because I believe their bowling attack lacks potency and they will struggle to keep teams to a total they can chase down.
That’s all for this week be sure to look out for part 3 where I will look at the remaining 4 teams.
