As a fan of cinema and Robert De Niro I bring you my personal top 5 De Niro films. Some are pretty obvious, some maybe not so obvious but if you haven’t seen any of these films I strongly suggest you do so.

The cold weather (although it’s supposed to be Summer) warrants for staying in bed and watching films, if any of these tickle your fancy then do yourself a favor and watch one of the greatest actors doing what he does best.

1. Goodfellas

Rating: 9/10

Starring: Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro

Plot: Young Henry Hill, with his friends Jimmy and Tommy, begins the climb from being a petty criminal to a gangster on the mean streets of New York.

2. Taxi Driver

Rating: 8.8/10

Starring: Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster and Cybill Shepherd

Plot: Travis, an ex-marine and Vietnam veteran, works as a taxi driver in New York City. One day, he is driven to save an underage prostitute from her pimp in an effort to clean the city of its corruption.

3. Raging Bull

Rating: 8.5/10

Starring: Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty and Joe Pesci

Plot: A middleweight ascends through the ranks to achieve his first shot at a boxing title. But his personal life, laden with paranoia, jealousy and rage, scuttles his professional growth.

4. Casino

Rating: 8/10

Starring: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone

Plot: Ace, a resourceful mafia associate, is asked to run casinos in Las Vegas and rises to power. However, his altercations with Nicky, his friend, and Ginger, his love interest, creates complications.

5. Cape Fear

Rating: 7.7/10

Starring: Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange

Plot: After serving a 14-year prison sentence for raping a young woman, Max stalks Sam, his defence lawyer, and his family to take revenge for concealing evidence that was in his favour during the trial.

Honorable Mention: Heat

Rating: 7.5/10

Starring: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Ashley Judd

Plot: Lieutenant Hanna, a detective, decides to catch a highly intelligent seasonal criminal who has vowed to pull off one last robbery before he retires for good.
