The NFL MVP race of 2020 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster.
Throughout the NFL calendar year we have seen many names enter the MVP conversation and leave but yet some have remained steadfast in the discussion and things seem to be closer than ever.
Below I have compiled my personal top 3 NFL MVP candidates based on performances and statistics thus far but remember we are only in the 13th week on the regular season and the list is subject to change. Without further adieu here are the leading candidates for the highly coveted award.
1. Patrick Mahomes
It comes as no surprise that Patrick Mahomes tops the list as the favorite to win the MVP award this year. Coming off a Super Bowl victory vs The San Francisco 49ers earlier in the year there seems to be no signs of a hangover for Pat Mahomes and The Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes is arguably the best player in the league right now and his statistics this year alone are testament to his exceptional talent and ability at the position. Through 12 games Mahomes has thrown for 3815yds, 31tds and ONLY 2 interceptions, can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that on who knows how many attempts he has thrown only 2 picks? He also has a 113.8 passer rating on the year. There’s no denying that The Chiefs are stacked as a whole but Mahomes is playing at such an elite level… it really is no surprise that Mahomes is leading the race.
2. Aaron Rodgers
Right behind Mahomes is ol’ faithful Aaron Rodgers. Aaron had something to prove this year after The Green Bay Packers drafted a QB in the first round of the NFL draft instead of getting him some help and snagging up a wide receiver (we all know how stacked the receiver class was this year). Many think Aaron had a down year in the 2019 although The Packers made the NFC Championship and fell to the eventual Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco but this year he has silenced all his critics showing us why he is the OG gunslinger in the league. Aaron leads the league in touchdown passes with 36 and a passer rating of 118.5 and 3395yds. Some of you may not know that Aaron Rodgers has the best TD:INT ratio in the league with that being said he only has 4 interceptions this year. Aaron is a very close second but with the way he is playing the game, he could enter first soon.
3. Russell Wilson
This one may come as a shock to a few but it’s easy to see why Russ is in the conversation and top 3 in my opinion. Russell Wilson is The Seattle Seahawks. There are no playoff dreams or Super Bowl hopes without that man who wears the number 3. Russell Wilson has been the best player on The Seahawks for years now but it’s even more evident now, without him this does not work, without him they would not be 8-4. The defense has been historically bad and it was oftentimes on Russ’ shoulders to will the team to victory. It’s no secret that he has taken a massive dip in form recently turning the ball over more than usual but he is so pivotal to this team. The MVP award has become more of a QB award and who has the best statistics but Russ is the MVP of his team by a wide margin and a top 3 QB in the league. Russ has 32tds, 11 interceptions and a passer rating of 101.8 so far. Not a terrible year at all based on personal statistics but the high turnover of the ball in recent games is what caused him to fall out of the top 2 after starting the year in first place.
Honorable Mentions:
- Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills
- Kyler Murray, QB, Arizona Cardinals
- Dalvin Cook, RB, Minnesota Vikings
